North Texas-based strategic communications firm Cooksey Communications recently added Reyne Telles to its team as an Austin-based vice president and Public Sector Practice leader. Telles will draw on his more-than-two-decade career leading communications efforts and managing media relations in the municipal and education sectors to advise Cooksey’s numerous public sector clients statewide and beyond.

“Reyne’s unique understanding of high-level strategic communication best practices for public sector entities, as well as his extensive experience designing and executing robust community engagement programs, makes him the perfect person to lead our highly regarded Public Sector Practice Group,” said Colby Walton, president of Cooksey Communications. “His skillset, coupled with the relationships he has built across Texas and the U.S., will bring new expertise and a guiding hand to clients and future groups in need of critical counsel on complex issues.”

Before joining Cooksey, Telles was the executive director of communications and community engagement for the last six years at Austin Independent School District (Austin ISD), consisting of 130 schools, 81,000 students and 12,000 employees. While at Austin ISD, Telles reported directly to the superintendent, advising on aspects of institutional planning, serving as a member of the administration’s executive cabinet, and devising and implementing district-wide communication and engagement approaches. In addition, Telles deepened stakeholder relations, recommended multicultural outreach strategies and pioneered empirical research on public perception for the district’s first award-winning marketing strategy.

Telles joined Austin ISD after serving as the director of communications for the office of Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell, a position Telles was appointed to by the Austin city manager to help build executive-level communications strategies during the mayor’s second term. This director role resulted from Telles’ six-year tenure as the manager of media relations for the City of Austin, where he worked as an advisor to and spokesperson for then City Manager and current International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Executive Director/CEO Marc Ott and his executive team.

Telles is currently a board member of Communities in Schools (CIS) of Central Texas, the nation’s largest and most effective dropout prevention organization. He was also a contributor to the “Toolkit for reopening schools after COVID-19” by the Council of Great City Schools, the only national organization exclusively representing the needs of large, urban public schools. Additionally, viewpoints from his presentation, “Community Engagement: Creativity and Courageous Conversations,” were featured in the recently released book, “50 Years of Closing Gaps, the Proceedings of the 22nd Annual Conference of the Mexican American School Board Association.”

Telles received his bachelor’s degree in communication and political science from Eastern New Mexico University and his master’s degree from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University  of Texas at Austin.

Cooksey Communications recently received four Platinum and two Gold honors in the 2019 Hermes Creative Awards, a prestigious international creative competition.

  • Platinum Winner – Public Relations Campaign – AllianceTexas. Cooksey was honored for the vast media coverage it secured in The Dallas Morning News, Dallas Business Journal, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Fort Worth Business Press and elsewhere about AllianceTexas’ unparalleled regional success. AllianceTexas, a 26,000-acre master-planned community developed by Hillwood, has generated $76.43 billion in regional economic impact and $2.25 billion in total taxes paid to local public entities since 1989.
  • Platinum Winner – Newspaper Advertising – The Real Estate Council (TREC). Cooksey was recognized for designing a two-page, full-color The Dallas Morning News ad for TREC, the largest and most influential commercial real estate organization in Texas. Cooksey scripted, designed and produced an impactful four-minute video featuring highlights from the 2018 Workforce Solutions annual report.   • Gold Winner – Special Event – Tarrant Regional Transportation Coalition (TRTC). Cooksey facilitated sponsorships, logistics, program development, marketing and media outreach for the all-important annual meeting of the Tarrant Regional Transportation Coalition, a prominent regional advocacy group.   • Gold Winner – Logo Design – MindSpark. Cooksey’s team named and designed the brand identity for the MindSpark Montessori Experience.   • Platinum Winner – Annual Report – Dallas Tourism Public Improvement District. Cooksey was selected to design the Dallas Tourism Public Improvement District’s 2019 annual report, “Inviting the World – Investing In Dallas.” The 28-page report presented exciting results from the fiscal year, as well as the overall context of what the partnership has done so far for the City of Dallas.
  • Platinum Winner – Communication/Marketing Plan – Southside Bank. Cooksey performed a comprehensive audit of the bank’s marketing and communications program in North Texas, benchmarked its efforts and resources against those of peer banks, and conducted interviews and focus groups. Based on this research, Cooksey developed strategic recommendations to enhance regional awareness of the bank’s brand and services in North Texas through best-in-class communications techniques.
  • Platinum Winner – Magazine Placement – Frisco Station Partners/Hillwood. Cooksey worked to secure and facilitate a 14-page spread in the Winter 2020 issue of Dallas-Fort Worth Real Estate Review, “Future Proof – Frisco Station Puts its Focus on Wellness, Connectivity and Mobility.” The extensive piece featured Frisco Station as a high-tech testing ground for air taxis and a hub of transportation, while also showcasing the AllianceTexas Mobility Innovation Zone, which is about to “spring to life testing autonomous trucks, drones, and other technologies stretching the limits of logistics and transportation.”
  • Platinum Winner – Integrated Marketing Materials – City of Coppell. Cooksey designed eye-catching collateral materials, including a logo, brochure, flyer, poster, postcard and PowerPoint template, to promote the city’s workforce transit campaign, “Work Hard … Get a Lyft.”
  • Gold Winner – Media Response – Jackson-Shaw. Jackson-Shaw purchased 45 acres in Houston to build its Nexus Park NorthWest industrial business park. Cooksey was honored for the vast media coverage it secured for the development in numerous regional publications and real estate trades, including the Houston Chronicle, Houston Business Journal, Texas Real Estate Business and Globe Street.
  • Gold Winner – Newspaper Placement – Skanska. Cooksey was recognized for securing the media placement “Young Women Get Exclusive Collin College Tour” in the Wylie News. The story was based on Cooksey’s invitation to local reporters to join young women from Wylie Independent School District who are interested in architecture, engineering and construction to participate on a hard hat tour of the new Collin College Wylie campus.
